Stepping down for Samantha Sim

Dear members,

Samantha Sim (402) will be stepping down as Chairman of KC Manga Society with effect from 13 Jan due to CLB lessons. Saleha shall take over as Chairman with effect from 14 Jan.

With regards to future Manga Society activities, we would like to recruit 20 or more new members before we can resume our activities. For all Sec 1s please note that this is SIA (Student-Initiated Activity) and all our activities are not, in anyway, funded by the school. All Sec 1s and 2s should have already been active and committed to their CCA before they were to consider an SIA.

Dear all,

The above festival is not to be missed. Especially when our school is a member of NHB (which means that we can go in for free as students), this showcase of anime and manga is worth the visit! Do take note that this exhibition is held in the 8Q gallery of National Museum and exhibition ends on 14th Dec. Besides the exhibits, there are workshops and anime screening:

Dear all,

We have been seeing members requesting to withdraw from this student-initiated activity over the last few months for various reasons (unable to cope with studies, under financial assistance, tuition classes and others)

As mentioned when we first began KC Manga, the fee paid per member would depend on the membership - more members means more students to share the cost. From 24 students (at the beginning of the year) to 15 members (on 29th August), we see a sharp decline in numbers, which means that the current members would have to pay more when we resume KC Manga training next year.

After calculation, if the price of hiring a trainer stays the same and we do not see any new members to join us next year, I am afraid to say that next year, each member will be paying a monthly fee of $32 instead.

The question is: Should we continue Manga Society in 2009?

I shall leave all of you to decide. Members please feedback to Samantha or Saleha your views this holiday, so that we can decide if we should renew our contract with Ms Lynette. (*Samantha and Saleha, please email me your views as well as the other members by end of the September break)

ASEAN ART COMPETITION 2008

Here is one competition you may like to consider. Do spend some time to read through the details and take note that the deadline for submission is 04 Aug 2008. Interested students may hand in their art works to Mr Sim after morning assembly on the same day for submission.

Objectives:

To promote and increase the awareness among school children in ASEAN on disaster risk reduction initiatives, particularly the importance of building safe schools , hospitals and housing. This is to realize the vision of a safer and disaster resilient ASEAN community.
To promote and increase awareness on ASEAN among school children.
To increase awareness of International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction.

THEME OF ART COMPETITION

"Safer Community - Hospital, School and House of My Dream"

CLOSING DATE:

All entries must be submitted to St Patrick's School by
Monday 4 August 08 by 2 pm

Top 3 selected entries will receive cash $300, $250 & $200 for the first, second and third prize winners respectively.
There are also 7 consolation prizes of $50 each.
These top 3 entries will be sent to Thailand to compete at the regional level for the Regional Review Committee to select the top 3 entries.
The regional prizes are as follows: First Prize : US$1000; Second Prize : US$500 and Third Prize US$300
The top 3 Regional Winners and their teachers will be invited to Thailand to join in the celebration of ASEAN Day for Disaster Management in Bangkok on 8 Oct 08 . Return air tickets and accommodation will be paid for during their stay in Bangkok.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Participants must not be above 15 years old on 1 Oct 2008 and must be a citizen of an ASEAN nation
Format of Entry: A1 size paper ( 594mm x 841mm)
One entry per participant
The drawing should depict all 3 aspects of the safer community -ie safe hospital, school and house, using the participants imagination.

This comic-manga (digital) competition is open to Primary 4-6 pupils and secondary school pupils.

Pupils are required to create a comic/manga that revolves around the theme “Climate Change”.
Pupils are encouraged to use their creativity and imagination to think of ways to bring their message across in a unique and engaging way.
Top three and five merit entries will be awarded prizes
Judging criteria will be based on:

Creativity and imagination (20%)

Originality (20%)

Proportion and anatomy (20%)

Storyline (20%)

Significance of Theme (20%)

The entry should have a minimum of 2 frames and a maximum of 6 frames.

Submission format:
Please submit a hard copy (A4 size) showing the comic/manga, with soft copy in CD Rom.
Label clearly with school, name, class and contact number.
All entries and required documents must be submitted by 5pm, 7 May 2008. Late entries will not be considered.

Dear all,

I would like to openly affirm my 2 dedicated exco-members, Samantha Sim (302) and Janice Phua (301) for running this student-initiated activity with me since Term 2.

The proposal for this SIA was drafted solely by these two Manga enthusiasts early this year. From the support of interested students, both of them collected their signatures, revised the proposal and handed it to Ms Lam for approval.

For the last 2 weeks, Samantha and Janice helped collecting our very first membership fees and last week, we saw our very first manga drawing lessons with Miss Lynette Wong and the participation of 20 students!

Hereby, I would like to call upon all members to cooperate with them, especially in paying membership fees promptly. To save papers (and trees), we have decided to post notices online and students who have no PCs at home, you can access the computers in the school library. (Hence, no excuses for not aware of our future activities.)

I am aware that some students' parents would like to see a hardcopy of an official memo or receipt for the payment of membership fees, please see me personally in the upper staffroom.

Payment for Manga Society activities

Dear all,

It has been brought to my attention that many of you are not prompt in making payment. On a personal note, this is not fair for the student, looking for members and collecting the payment.

A reminder for all: Manga society cannot sustain or bloom into a CCA without full support from all members. If you are required to pay, pay on time. If you know anyone who has yet to pay, remind her to do so.

If this culture of delayed payment were to carry on for the subsequent 2 terms, we would have to reconsider the feasibility of Manga Society as an SIA. Students who are on financial assistance are strongly advised to reconsider your membership in this SIA.

Also take note that the cost of the instructor is to be equally bore by all existing members and hence, any students who wish to drop out of the SIA, would result in the other members to pay more for the subsequent months.

Hi everyone,

It is official! The inaugural KC Manga Society will commence on the 24th March (Mon) from 2.50pm to 4.50pm at Art Room 1.

As we will be paying the instructor on a monthly basis (for 2 terms), all members are to pay a monthly(4 weeks) fee of $25 before lesson begins on the 24th, to either Janice (301) or Samantha (302).

Members are to take note that the above fee includes the art materials as they will be provided by the instructor.

16th Noma Concours - Picture Book illustrations

Here's something to keep yourself busy and stand to win attractive prizes.

The Noam Concours is known as one of the most prestigious contests for picture book illustrations in the world. Organised by the Asia/Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO (ACCU), it aims to provide an opportunity to introduce the works of illustrators in Asia, the Pacific, Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and the Middle East to the wider world.
Entrants should be above 15 years old, and entries should comprise five or more separate illustrations for one picture book.
Cash prizes and medals will be awarded by an international jury meeting in November 2008. The closing date for entries is 30 September 2008.
